Hello, my name is Chris Madden and I am an Integrative Counselling Psychotherapist; it’s a bit of a tongue twister but essentially means that I offer a safe and non-judgmental space for you to explore a present difficulty. This will be done at your pace, in a collaborative way, helping you to explore or identify the stuff that might not be working for you and to navigate a new way of being – with more choices. You might want to know what kind of therapist I am. There are many words that I could use to let you know; relational, person centred, humanistic. These all mean that I am interested in who you are, who you have been and who you are becoming in relation to yourself and others. No amount of words will ever describe each of us and everyone has different needs, so my way of working is flexible and geared towards the changes you would like to make. I appreciate how difficult it can be to take the first steps towards seeking help or meeting a new therapist and, equally, how important it is to feel comfortable with the person you choose as your therapist; so I offer an initial session to meet, talk, ask questions and decide if I’m right for you. I encourage you to give me a call and begin to investigate for yourself whether or not we might work well together. I work with people from all walks of life and many of my clients come from the creative industries. Having spent 20 years working in the music industry, I understand the pitfalls, stresses and anxieties of life in a fast paced and sometimes chaotic working environment.

The focus of my work is helping couples who are experiencing difficulties with communication, sexuality, infidelity and a whole variety of different issues. I have been in private practice since 1994, originally the focus of my work was with adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. In 2010 I began my training with the Tavistock Relationships and gained my PGDip in Couples Counselling, this was followed by Masters in Psychosexual therapy, with a specific couples focus. Currently I am also offering Online Therapy for Couples who may not be able to get to the clinics due to childcare issues or distance or disability.

I am a client centred Art Psychotherapist and am passionate about the value and benefits of art making. Within my sessions I aim to provide a safe, non-judgmental space for clients to explore and reflect on their inner world. Together we use the art made in sessions as a way to make sense of the clients past and present experiences, to improve their personal and emotional wellbeing and understand their sense of identity. I work non-directionally and use a variety of ways in an attempt to engage clients including working on images alongside therm. Art Psychotherapy sessions are as shared and equal experience between myself an the client. My approach to sessions is psychodynamic. I am particularly interested in conscious and unconscious processes and the impact they have not just on a clients’ identity, behaviour and attitude but also the effect this has on their own interpersonal relations. I have worked extensively within various settings, delivering therapy to children, adolescents, adults and forensic clients. I provide therapy to clients of varying diagnosis and challenging behaviours including psychosis, personality disorders, self-harm, historical abuse and neglect and anger issues. I am a fully qualified Art Psychotherapist working in the Leeds and York area. I am a registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and a full member of the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT). I can offer individual and group sessions.
